History

Dolenjske Toplice was first mentioned in writing in the year 1228, when Henrik IV, the Margrave of Istria, donated a part of his property to the Cistercian monastery in Stična. In the year 1385 Toplice came under the property of the Counts of Auersperg from Turjak. After World War II, the town started to develop into a balneological rehabilitation centre, which today offers a raft of relaxing and recreational activities.

Location and climate

Dolenjske Toplice is a settlement and municipality near Novo Mesto in southeastern Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola. The municipality is now included in the Southeast Slovenia statistical region. The town lies on the Sušica River, which joins the Krka 2 km north of town. It is a spa town known for its thermal baths established in 1658 by the Counts of Auersperg. It has continental climate with mild to hot summers and cold winters.

Tourist attractions

The parish church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Anne and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Novo Mesto. It is a Gothic building that was restyled in the Baroque in the late 17th century.

Surroundings

Without a doubt, the new relaxation and spa complex is of interest to the tourist; and the Balnea centre offers its visitors the highest degree of relaxation and accumulation of positive energy. Besides the health-resort complex, the municipality boasts a rich natural and cultural heritage. The town has many historical, architectural and Dinarian-Karst points of interest and also offers sport activities including bicycling and hiking.

Natural healing resources

The town was named after its thermal spring (37 - 38 oC), which gave a special seal to the development of the town and its surroundings.  Auerspergs following the model of the middle European thermal spas of that time, elevated the public baths of Dolenjske Toplice to the more distinguished "gorke in grezne kopeli" (warm and mud baths).
