History
Residence in the settlement around the castle of the former royal castle Froburg was built in 13th century. It was first mentioned in 1378 (Podhrad Markt). From the beginning, the castle was also called Hluboká in Czech language, possibly because of the former deep woods or a raised position. The town below was simply named Podhradí for centuries, which was in 1885 officialy changed to Hluboká and since 1924 has been extended to today form. The town became Hluboká nad Vltavou by decree from 4th October 1907 issued by Emperor Franz Josef I.
Location and climate
Own local part of the Hluboká nad Vltavou lies below Castle Hill in places where the Vltava River leaves lowland basin in České Budějovice and begins its way through the Táborská hilly area. The core of the city (former settlement around the castle) is located on the left bank of the Vltava River.
Tourist attractions
From the tourist point of view is Hluboká very attractive place. Former attraction for visitors is the Neo-Gothic chateau Hluboká. There are also other attractive targets as Zoo Fence, luxurious golf course, Prince's Court and the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery.
Surroundings
Approximately two kilometers southwest of the city is the second largest pond of the Czech Republic. Its name is Bezdrev on which are widely operated water sports such as yachting. Annually are organized horse races on Podskalský meadow. At the turn of 2001/2002 the racetrack have been adjusted to a golf course. Hluboká is also home of the hockey club HC Hluboká Knights.
