Cesky Krumlov

Czech Krumlov is a district town in the South Bohemian Region, 22 km southwest of Ceske Budejovice. It lies under the ridge forest Blanský les and the Vltava River flows throughit. This is a major tourist center in the Southern Bohemia.

History

Little Castle on the left shore of the Vltava River was probably founded somewhere between 1230 and 1239 by son Vitek from Prčice. The first written mention about him was found in a deed from 1253. In 1274 in the bend (meander) of the Vltava River was founded its own city. In 1475 the mines were opened for the extraction of silver, but later then came a large influx of German miners, who began gradual process of Germanization of the city. In the 19th century was economic activity renewed as a result of the "industrial revolution". The further development of new industries - especially textile, wood processing and food industry, began after 1948. After November of 1989 the district town Krumlov became one of the most important destination for foreign tourists in Czech Republic.

Location and climate

Czech Krumlov is situated in a slightly warm, very wet area on the foot of highlands Blanský forest. Maximum average monthly temperature is 16,4 ° C and falls on month of July. January is the coldest month with average monthly temperature of -2,9 ° C. Average annual rainfall is 644 mm.

Tourist attractions

The medieval city center, surronded by Vltava River meanders, is urban reserve from 1963 and from 1992 is registered in UNESCO World Heritage. In 2003 suburbs of Plešivec (south of the historic core) were declared as urban memorial zone. Czech Krumlov is also cultural center. On the Horná street we can find Municipal Theathre, where during summer months are plays on a revolving auditorium in the castle garden.

Surroundings

Castle of Czech Krumlov has the largest castle area after Prague Castle in the country. The original Gothic castle, rebuilt mainly in Renaissance style is made up of the Lower Castle (the original Little Castle) with a dominant tower and the Upper Castle. The bridge named Na plášti - multy-storeyed bridging of Deer Garden - combines the castle and castle garden and was built in 1764. Cascade fountain, Baroque summer residence of Belárie and the revolving auditorium for the theatre in the open country are situated in the Castle Garden - founded in the 2nd half of the 16th century with total area of 10 ha.
