Modra

Modra is old wine town and is one of the landmarks of the Small Carpathian wine region. It lies on the southeastern slopes of Little Carpathians , which are a protected area . Modra is one of the largest wine-growing towns of the Slovak Republic but also the capital of ceramics , schools , historical sites , culture, science , research and recreation, city of wine and service .

History

The first traces of settlement dates  to the third millennium BC. The first written mention of Modra is of 12 and 13 century. In 1607 city received privileges of a free royal town of Modra by Rudolf II. and so was the most important royal cities The Kingdom of Hungary. From 1610 to 1646 the city built the city walls with three gates. In the 17th century was among the most developed cities in viticulture, forestry, guild production, education and culture.

Modra for its unique position under the Small Carpathian side is called the pearl of the Small Carpathians.

Tourist attractions

There are many memorable and historic buildings in Modra. They are known like Upper Gate, Bastion rotunda, the old town hall built in the early 17th century and renovated in classical style in 1836, church of 14 century, and particularly residues fortification walls. The town has many houses, reminiscent of stay Stur in Modra, especially Ludovit Stur and his brother Karol Stur. Both are buried in the cemetery of Modra.

Modra is ideal for trips into the surrounding countryside. For lovers of history is only ten kilometers to the castle of the thirteenth century Červený Kameň, which is a permanent exhibition of historical furniture, weapons, castle gallery and other attractions.
